my little cavern

Hello! Its been awhile since I've blogged, forgive me. The last few weeks have been an epic whirlwind of fun. I had an amazing journey with my lovely Sarah, filled with amazing food, tasty drinks (jellyshots & homemade berry wine = love), hilarious television, smoking galore and many, many outbursts of song. Oh, my sweet Sarah. I can't even put it into words. I didn't stop smiling. I ever so needed to get away from the city for some R&R and it was truly that. If the blueberries had been ripe, it would've been almost too perfect. Trust me, we looked (in our PJs). Best vacation ever.

Since I've been back, I've been mostly working, but I've had time for a few adventures. David and I embarked on a sunny, early morning adventure for breakfast and Johnson Geo Centre times. The Geo Centre is like, a museum devoted to... scientific history, one might say? There are exhibits about human evolution, space technology, the planets, oil, genetics (and the Titanic, but that gets a bit old after seeing it three times for me, really... though I love the old furniture). As you can imagine, we pretty much died of happiness. I was especially awe-struck by this:

This, my friends, is an Amethyst geode, and its pretty much the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. They had big enough for me to put my hand in at the Geo Centre, and it made me ache with sparkly purple love. They had one in the gift shop actually, but sadly it was $300. Someday! We also came across these adorable little buggers there:

OH MY GOD THEY'RE MICROBES. They had so many cute ones there, which were also mostly pathogenic! Yes, yes, their gift shop is kind of nerd heaven.  our day also featured apple walnut french toast, coffee,  strolling in the sunshine, yard sales, odd encounters and lots of giggles. It was pretty much magical. The boy is gone to Stephenville now, so I have my whole apartment to myself. I cleaned the entire house from top to bottom, and have been spending lots of time bonding with my bedroom - right now I have nice lighting, comfy clothes, candles, incense, the smell of clean sheets and music. I couldn't be more relaxed.

I must head to the land of dreams, sadly, friends. Overnight inventory with my boss tomorrow night, which should be a treat. Also tales of graveyard adventures, painting and desserts. There is love.

nothing but the rain

Yesterday Sarah and I went on an adventure to look for pretty paper that ended in us giggling in a random parking lot at 10pm, smoking and drinking lemonade. It was a pretty beautiful time. Though we were unsuccessful in our pretty paper search (though there were some cuties, just nothing that was worth spending our last few pennies on), I did pick up a pack of oil pastels, which is a medium I've missed working with a lot. They're like crayons on crack, and are so fun and easy to use. I have watercolor wax pastels but they just aren't the same (though also very fun, and just as portable). I started drawing a self-portrait, and have come to the conclusion (yet again) that I fail at drawing facial features. This is why most of the things I draw don't have faces. NOTHING SHOULD HAVE A FACE.

Between monetary stress, all my friends slowly disappearing into the void and twiddling my thumbs waiting for next semester I feel like I'm pretty much going to go insane. Combine that with volunteering, working and being at the tail-end of my current (absolutely ridiculous) semester and you have a perfect recipe for one stressed out Sierra. Its a hard time to be alive, friends.

Things I want to do over my almost two month break to comfort myself:
- Read about anatomy.
- Get some more Philippa Gregory novels (she writes TERRIBLE historical romance novels about Tudor era England that I'm slightly addicted to, such a guilty pleasure).
- Draw and paint more.
- Write more poetry.
- Take a fuckton of epic, epic baths.
- Try to save up some money for schooltimes, possibly by depositing half of every pay cheque I get into the bank of David Stacey.
- Smoke a thousand cigarettes.
- Actually buy groceries and make myself something delicious to eat. I haven't bought "real" groceries in what feels like months. Can somebody please describe to me what an apple tastes like?
- Write letters to Lenore and Amki and make little things for them.

My boyfriend's 23rd birthday is tomorrow. I remember celebrating his 16th birthday with him over homemade pizza and root beer, so this is an odd thing really. I am trying to think of something I could possibly maybe make for him. Any suggestions, friends?

its always better when we're together

Its a hard time in life. Dave has taken to calling me Eeyore, because all week I've been making suggestions to myself that are either peppy or practical or what have you, then following them by a very unenthusiastic "but what's the goddamn point". Yesterday sort of showed me that there is in fact a point.

I was in a sad little mood, and my lovely Sarah and I went down to a duck pond with ice cream and chicken fingers. We talked about life over a million cigarettes, while the sky painted pictures with clouds for us and old people held hands. We watched a true display of friendship when a guy fearlessly jumped into the scuzzy pond to rescue his friend's dog. We got crafty together on a park bench, and eventually our sighs of anguish and frustration turned into silly smiles and laughter. Afterwards we went to bulk barn and I giggled at my boyfriend's enthusiasm for peanut butter and lentils. Later that night, I got to hug a friend I haven't seen in months and tell her stories, surprised that my life hasn't stopped completely and I actually have stories to tell. I have a life. Stuff happens in it. Some of those things are wonderful.

My point here being that I have been reminded of my own personal mantra - that life is a cycle, and where there is good bad will follow, and where there is bad good will follow. Its been one of the hardest summers of my life, I've lost so many beautiful things. I've been stressed. I've been poor. I've questioned and cursed and been furious. But where there is darkness, there is light. I'm just grateful for the people I really care about now and all the things that make me happy. Life will get become incredible again in little baby steps, as it always does. Its already happening. And even despite the badness, I can still honestly say that I am happy, and that I am grateful.

So, in keeping with this trend of happiness, I'd like to make a list of the things that are making me happiest now, and are more or less sustaining my life force. Here goes!

1. Memories.
2. Big, green leaves catching the sunlight everytime I walk out my front door.
3. Good cups of tea, like earl gray and the lemongrass matte I bought yesterday! Its heaven for my aching throat.
4. GIANT BAG OF MINESTRONE. Also from my Bulk Barn adventure. I love soup, and minestrone is my favorite, so I am a happy girl at present.
5. Battlestar Galactica times with Allan. I'm a sucker for a good sci-fi series, and as we're drawing to the show's end my breath is taken away more and more by the utter brilliance of the writers, the actors, the composers. Its incredible in every way.
6. Writing. I've been writing lots of poetry lately, and it is making certain parts of my heart feel at peace with other parts.
7. My beautiful friends, who are always there for me no matter what.
8. My job, which may sound funny, but its so nice to be making money again and have a place where I can shut off my brain completely! Its a blessing sometimes.
9. I am warm all the time.
10. Listening to '90s music.
11. Reading Kurt Vonnegut novels.
12. Clean, wonderful smelling laundry.
13. Fruit.
14. Dreaming about the future.
15. Painting and drawing again.
16. My boyfriend's silly dances.

Not anything particularly extraordinary, but its the little things, you know?

the swedish princess

Three years ago, this message appeared in my Facebook indox. I didn't realize it then, but this was one of the most important pieces of internet correspondence I'd ever receive. What began as a small voyage across Canada for the sake of poetry and meeting some very special people turned into some the most amazing years. I'll never forget when Amkiram arrived at my door, on one foggy St. John's morning. She leapt straight into my arms and we had the longest, squealiest hug that two people who've never met face to face before have ever shared. I knew immediately that she was a beautiful soul.

I've never known anybody so incredible before. She is stunningly beautiful. Friendly, warm, intelligent, talented. I've never seen her fail at anything, and she never quits. She's determined, fierce. She is the kindest, most loving person I've ever met. She's the most understanding person I've ever met. She sees beauty in everything. She's the kind of person whose smile alone makes you feel like you are a good person, you are beautiful, and that you are loved.

She came about at a time in my life when I needed to feel those things, and I don't think I'd be such a positive and optimistic person today if it weren't for her. And I think that if Amki had never come here my life would be entirely different. I'm certainly grateful that she did. Today when I said goodbye to her, I thanked her. Because what she brought into my life was the most beautiful, precious gift I've ever received. She gave me myself. She gave me light. She gave me one of the most beautiful friendships I've ever had, and I hope that it will endure until we're old ladies.

I know she's going to do amazing in university, that her life in Sweden will be wonderful and beautiful. I have a million amazing memories of her that nothing can ever take away from me. I just wish we had more time, there are so many things we never got a chance to do. But I know we haven't seen the last of each other - our paths will cross again.

Like I said. This isn't the end, its just the beginning.

I love you.

future blues

Too much thinking about the future lately! And I thought living in the past was a scary thing, at least I know what happened and wasn't left chewing my fingernails in anxious speculation.

Life is changing greatly - people are breaking up, moving away, getting jobs, graduating... its SCARY, thats what it is. I like to think that moving forward and growing up is a positive thing, but when I really think about what that means I break out in cold sweats. Sure, the idea of people moving away and getting houses and jobs and babies and husbands/wives is a sweet little idea, but. Those are the first steps to crazy mortgage debt, divorces, people dying, diseases, old age, etc. I want everybody I know to have a fairytale life, where they live happily ever after and die of old age in their beds, but oh wait - this is real life.

I don't WANT to grow up, can we all just please stay 20 and beautiful and carefree forever? When I think about getting divorced, my hair turning gray, my skin wrinkling, my parents dying... ahhh. Stop it, life. This is why living in the present is a beautiful thing, you can just take it as it comes and worry about things when you get there. I don't want to keep checking a map, I just wanna watch the trees blur past me on the highway until I get there. Can I please?

I've ripped out my hair enough this post, I think! I know you're all just as scared as me, so I shall let Mr. Waits finish wailing on my behalf. Positive thoughts, people.

the crimson petal and the white

Allan Ford and I have a special bond over many things - men, books, movies, music, and good television. We like nothing better than to curl up in his bed together for hours and watch amazing television. We laugh, we cry, we criticize, we feel deep embarrassment, we get into intense philosophical and psychological debates. I think a dream come true for us would be getting to direct and write our own series, but alas.

One of our mutual favorite books is "The Crimson Petal and the White" by Michel Faber. Its set in Victorian London, and follows the life of a prostitute named Sugar. She has the distinction of being incredibly articulate and well-read for a woman of her age and class, and when she's not, ahem, "servicing" gentlemen she spends her time composing a novel in which she gets her revenge upon all the men who have violated and wronged her in her life. She yearns to escape to something better. Luckily, she becomes the mistress and obsession of a man who owns a successful perfume and soap company - and leaves her old life behind. But thats just the beginning.

We heard for years that there was talk of making this incredible book into a movie - with Kristen Dunst, of all people, as Sugar. These, so far, have proved  to only be rumors. However, the BBC did a four-part miniseries based on the novel, and let me tell you friends, its an exquisite piece of awesomeness. The actors are superb and its so faithful to the novel in both script and atmosphere. Its one of the most beautiful creations I've ever seen, and exceeded all my expectations for a screen adaptation of the novel.

I beg you, if you have four hours to spare and want something visually pleasing, moving, and well acted to occupy your time, go find it! And read the book - its over 1000 pages long, but its amazing how fast those pages fly.

the unbearable lightness of being

This weekend, my beautiful friend Sarah lopped off all my hair! Daniel took this gorgeous photo of it, and I just had to share. He has the best camera phone (the best phone, really) of all time, and he takes some marvelous photos with it. Thank you Sarah for your amazing skills! Thank you Amki for holding my hand and giggling with me through our mutual transformation! Thank you friends for being so awesome and making my Friday a dream!

I'm already reaping the numerous benefits of short hair. Its not a tangled mess when I wake up in the morning! I have to use a dime sized amount of shampoo! I don't need conditioner! It takes 2 seconds to style! I will never beg my mom to grow out her curlies again, nor question why so many damn soccer moms have short hair. Its cute and fun and simple to live with. Hence, I am in LOVE. Goodbye long mess of difficulty, hello sweetness.

This Friday was surely a dream - walks in the sunshine, drinking delicious wine, having lots of girl time, lightsabers, numerous cigarettes, and a beer funnel full of sweet drenching love. My friends are awesome. Seriously.

Now I am settling down to a lazy Sunday of studying chemistry and anthropology, reading about health care, and wishing for coffee like nobody's business. I have two midterms this week, in anthro and chem, and an assignment due and all kinds of other stuff to be at. I've been sliding off the ball lately in terms of academicness, needs to scooch my way back up there! GPA, I shall lift you to the heavens!

G'day, sweethearts.

young woman stranded on headache island

I've had the worst headache ever for what feels like weeks. Methinks I'm dehydrated, but somedays I drink about 7 glasses a water and my brain still ends up feeling like painful squish! What's a girl to do?

Its been an interesting weekend, I haven't been overly productive in the least, really. Fell behind on work for certain. Today I went for a sunshine-filled walk with my friend Allan down to the house of another friend. Six of us went and played in the park. Then I came home and made a grand supper of root vegetables and pork chops for my sweetheart & I, while listening to "Goo" by Sonic Youth and "Let It Die" by Feist. There was wine involved. It was lovely.

What's on the schedule for this week? Theres a Joey home. I have to start studying chemistry again as though my life depended on it. I need to study anthropology, catch up on my readings for all my classes. Sigh. The life of a student. Particularly one with a perpetual headache.

I need a new book to read. Any suggestions?

Thats all for now. Love, honeys. And more love.

road to somewhere

I had a very long chemical day today, with the funnest lab ever this afternoon - so many fun colors and interesting smells! Now I am heading home to make some delicious food for my beautiful friends, and maybe watch some Arrested Development (I've seen it a thousand times, but I am addicted, really... its the best show ever to just throw on no matter what you're doing).

In other news - anybody remember me bitching about wanting to start a poetry blog? I'm sure I did so within the last five days or less. Well, I did it! And I have some of my old poetry chums on board and liking the idea so I am pleased. Also, very pleased with how the layout turned out - I made the banner myself, ain't it purdY? Hopefully I can keep up with the challenge of having two blogs, I've heard its pretty daunting. But we'll see! Still sorting out everything for it, but I'll be posting my own poetry and other poetry related stuff, and anybody is welcome to send me things to post - the details are all there if anybody is curious.

Now, I must scurry home. I love you all.

princess leslie feist of canada

Daniel Tobin & I have too much fun together. Our friendship is like crack - we can't get enough of it and when we're away from each other for more than a day at a time we go through some serious withdrawal. Last night we got together for an adventure of mass proportions, that included so much food I'm amazed I can stand up today (pork chops, mashed potatoes, cheesecake, popsicles, popcorn, followed by a spontaneous second supper and drinks at Jungle Jim's). During our time together, he introduced me to a beautifully magnificent documentary that I am making everybody watch, as a requirement for maintaining my friendship.

The documentary is titled "Look at What the Light Did Now", which is about the beautiful Ms. Leslie Feist and the process she went through in creating the album and the tour for her album "The Reminder". And may I just say, it made me both ashamed and sad that I have not seen her live yet. She worked with an artist to create this intense shadow imagery for her live shows that just took my breathe away, and the scenes of Feist in her GORGEOUS home recording her album were so very delightful. You should see her house! Its like she lives in a fairytale. She seems like the sweetest person alive, and I want to be her best friend.

WATCH IT OMFG.

presents of love

Woo, anthropology in 15 minutes, and just enough time to post about one of my favorite blogger's first giveaways! Sarah is a dear, dear friend of mine and she is celebrating FIVE YEARS amongst the blog world. It is her biggest passion in life so I know how happy this number must make her. Go Sarah!

So, for the giveaway she is giving away a notebook, a mixed CD (which I can say confidently is deadly), and some uber pretty nail-polish. If anybody wants to enter said giveaway, head over to her blog and read the rules, and check out the pictures she has posted of the lovely items!

Also, if you love craftiness (and Canadian politics sometimes, hehe) I recommend giving her blog a read. She has some pretty adorable creations posted, and its a good read all around.

Quick, before May 25th!

1673

I am having a lazy day at school today. Myself & my honey did some grocery shopping last night, and I have a tasty lunched packed as a result - a turkey sandwich on rye bread, a banana, and a few chocolate chip oatmeal cookies made by yours truly! Its my mum's recipe, and man are they yummy.

I'll skip right on ahead to the 30 day movie challenge. I have lots to say, but sadly not enough time to say it! There will be another post soon, I promise.

DAY 26: LEAST FAVORITE BOOK ADAPTATION

"Running with Scissors", 2006.

I was so. Disappointed. With this movie. My mom randomly bought me the paperbook of this book for Christmas. Such a treasure - so hysterically funny, and tragic in an over-dramatic adolescent way thats totally aware that its being adolescent and over-dramatic.  A book has never made me laugh this much. But despite the awesomeness of the book, and the movie's phenomenal cast (Alec Baldwin, Annette Benning, Gwenyth Paltrow, Evan Rachel Wood, to name a few), they pretty much butchered the novel in translation to the screen. Mind you, the book is terribly crude and downright shocking in parts, so I can understand that they had to cut out certain parts. But the part that killed me the most was that it took the entire tone of the book, which had so much self-irony, and just made everything seem so sappy. Ruined it for me. Sigh.

DAY 27: FAVORITE DOCUMENTARY

"The Botany of Desire",  2009.

Daniel first introduced me to this not too long ago. Its a PBS documentary based on a book, and its all about PLANTS! More specifically, its about 4 different plants - tulips, marijuana, potatoes, and apples - and how they have evolved along with humans, and how our evolution has affected them, and focuses on 4 emotions or states or needs they've evoked or contributed to in human society - beauty, intoxication, power, and sweetness respectively. Its pretty interesting, and brought up a lot of points about all 4 I've never considered and had no idea about. Its definitely an interesting documentary, and I would recommend for sure if you're at all into stuff about nature and plants. It'll blow your mind, as it did with my own.

DAY 28: MOVIE WITH THE BEST ENDING

"Inglourious Basterds", 2009.

Oh, man. Not only is the ending of this movie awesome, its probably the most satisfying ending of any movie ever. Its by Quentin Tarantino, who I mentioned previously is basically the master of all action films. In this movie, he shies away from his double-crossing/kung-fu/serialized action roots and goes for something a bit different, and a bit more controversial - a retelling of history, more or less, in which the Third Reich and Adolf Hitler actually get what they deserve. The acting is superb, and Brad Pitt is so funny as Aldo Raine it makes me pee myself. Its a brilliantly pieced together movie, with a lot of humor, tension and violence. The scene where two parties separately conspire and succeed to burn down/blow up a theater filled with Nazis is probably one of the best executed and memorable scenes of any movie ever. If you haven't seen it, you probably should.

Now, kittens, I must do some chemistry problems before class resumes. I bid you all good day. And only one day of 30 day movie challenge left! Are you excited? I have so many ideas for future bloggins' but I really need a camera or a scanner someday. Sigh. Love!

seeds.

Yes, it has been ages. I have no internet and school is out so I very seldom find myself online these days. This doesn't bother me too much, I can do everything I want to do on the internet in about 15 minutes flat. Facebook? Friends' blogs? News? Done. I'm not a big internetter, I'm afraid. But I've been having a good life offline - lots of books and love and movies and such. I love break, its gorgeous. I got excellent marks on my second semester of university and summer is slowly crawling towards me. Life feels pretty good.

I've been reading lots and lots lately. It feels pretty good. Here are some books I've read over break so you can all giggle at me:

"Emily of New Moon" by L. M. Montgomery.
"The Other Boleyn Girl" by Phillippa Gregory.
"Utopia" by Thomas More.
"Tropic of Capricorn" by Henry Miller.
"The Last Unicorn" by Peter S. Beagle (FINALLY!!! Allan lent me his copy and it was seriously everything I hoped it would be... so beautiful. Read it right now.)

I've been a busy little bee. Some great books, some trashy romantic historical fiction (love them), some other stuff that falls pretty well in the middle.

Also... I'm growing a pretty tea plant! I will post pictures here someday if I ever have the means to. It was one of my summer goals to grow something and it is sprouting all green and beautiful so I am very pleased.

Now, some 30 day movie challenge? Think so. I know its been ages but I will only do three. Needs to milk this for all its worth, hehehe.

DAY 18: THE FUNNIEST MOVIE YOU'VE EVER SEEN

"Wet Hot American Summer", 2001.

This movie pretty much defines mine and Allan Ford's friendship. Its about the last day of summer camp in the '80s, and stars a lot of the old school Saturday Night Live cast and lots of other pretty hilarious people. Its absolutely ridiculous and pretty much makes milk and other fluids come out of my nose. I've seen it about 15 times but it still absolutely kills me. If you have a twisted, silly sense of humor I think you'd feel the same. Also, a great summer movie. I've begun harassing Allan to watch it with me again already.

DAY 19: THE MOVIE THAT SCARED YOU THE MOST

"The Ring", 2002.

Okay, in my defense I first saw this movie when I was in grade eight, but for the first time in my life I was scared to sleep in the dark, and a little freaked out by TVs. No horror movie has ever freaked me out more. Also, as far as j-horror remakes this one is pretty great. Naomi Watts is awesome and the cinematography - all the grainy black and blueness of everything - was so eerily beautiful. This movie also kicked off my obsession with j-horror originals that lasted many years. Most are silly, but I've found some gems. Also, the original is particularly creepy. Great horror movie.

DAY 20: A MOVIE YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE HAVE SEEN

"The Dreamers", 2003.

This movie is delectable, and I've only met maybe like 3 people in my life that have seen it. So underrated, in my opinion. Its set in the 1960s in France, with the riot of 1968 as a backdrop for the film's events. It focusses on three friends - an American and two French siblings - who are students and film buffs, and much of the film is composed of clips from famous old black and white films that the friends are reenacting or remembering. The acting is gorgeous, and its incredibly sexy and funny and sad. A bit incestual, but its done tastefully and adds a lot to the film's story. I can definitely recommend. One of my favorites.

Thats all for today. I am at Mullock currently with Daniel my love, who yesterday purchased the Krupp diamond for me, or the most inexpensive alternative he could find at least. It is lovely. I am having a most wonderful Sunday, and I hope that you are too.

suerte

No big surprise that today finds me oh-so-sleepy and tired again. I spent 3/4 of yesterday on my couch studying biology, and the other 1/4 at Allan's watching Battlestar Galactica with him. Nerdy, yes, but you should watch this show, its one of the most brilliant I've ever seen as far as storylines, acting, and making a fictional world come alive. If you like sci-fi at all, its definitely a treat.

I just finished writing my last English exam, possibly ever, which makes met terribly sad. Two essay questions, now my wrists shall ache for eternity. My prof gave me my research paper back too since I slept through his office hours yesterday, which I got an 85% on! Yay! He said a lot of really nice things about my writing too which put a smile on my face. If I didn't fear poverty and laughter, I'd probably do an English major so I could write all day. Maybe if I ever become a nurse I'll write some epic sweeping tale of my career and all the scary shit I've seen when I retire or something. I love how much English motivates me to write, its the only thing I've ever been good at really.

Now its onto day 12, 13, and 14 of the 30 day movie challenge. These questions were a bit of a struggle.

DAY 12: FAVORITE DIRECTOR

This one is probably one of the more challenging ones, as there are too many beautiful directors in life for me to pick just one. So, I am forcing myself to do so, and that director is... Darren Aronofsky! For his gorgeous, original movies that make me laugh and cry and my jaw hang open in wonderment and sometimes horror. Come on, he directed "Requiem for a Dream", "Black Swan", "The Fountain", and "The Wrestler". Can you get anymore diverse? Not to mention his black and white math thriller, "Pi", which is probably one of the best movies ever made on such a low budget. I find he's one of those directors that really enables you get inside a character's head and feel exactly what they feel, and see what they see. His movies are as beautiful as any poem or painting. Plus he's married to Rachel Weisz, what a hottie.

Honorable mentions, because this was so hard: Charlie Kaufman, Michel Gondry, Danny Boyle, Wes Anderson.

DAY 13: FAVORITE ANIMATED CHARACTER FROM A MOVIE

Ariel, from "The Little Mermaid", 1989.

I die for the Little Mermaid. Its definitely in my top 5 animated favs of all time, and after watching it on acid my life is just that much more delightful (I'm sure you've all heard that story 10,000 times, its my favorite). If I had to pick a favorite animated character, it would probably be her. She's fun, cute, loves to sing, and I love her collection of human objects, I think its beautiful. I'd probably do the same if I lived under the sea. Also, the Little Mermaid is probably my favorite Hans Christian Anderson story ever. If you've never read it, I say do so. Its far more depressing and tragic than the Disney movie, for sure.

DAY 14: FAVORITE BLACK & WHITE MOVIE

"All About Eve ", 1950.

Oh man, this movie. Another of the amazing classics the big sister turned me onto, and man is it ever good. It follows the story of a woman named Eve, as she worms herself into the inner circle of a famous Broadway actress named Margo Channing (the hotness that is Bette Davis) and more or less attempts to usurp her life & career. The movie is told entirely in flashback, as at the beginning Eve is seen receiving an award for her acting as a room full of very angry people stare at her, and the movie begins to explain everyone's apparent hatred for this woman. Its pretty brilliant, I must say. You have to love the classics.

Thats all for today! I am off for grocery shopping and cleaning with the boyfriend. Vegetarian chili and honey cake with friends tonight? Yes, please. Have a good one, y'all!

here we are again all by ourselves

Its time for day 3 of the 30 day movie challenge! w00t! Today's topic is a bit more straightforward than the first two, but equally awesome nonetheless.

DAY 3: LAST MOVIE YOU SAW IN THEATRES

"True Grit", 2010.

This is also the first movie I've chosen thats come out in the last two decades, I've noticed. One cold Sunday night me and my boys, Joey and Dave, were sitting around in my cozy blue apartment bored as snails, when I decided to hound them with the idea of seeing a movie. Hounding wasn't needed. Dave and I had wanted to see this for awhile, and Joey was totally down. Fortunately, all three of us adored it. How could we not? The Coen Brothers are among the best directors, well, ever in my opinion. They have such a diverse catalogue of films ("Fargo", "The Big Lebowski", "Burn after Reading"). They have something for everybody. True Grit was no exception to their genius. Its based on a novel, and is the story of a young girl back in the day who vows revenge on the man who murdered her father. Its a western, lots of horses and gunfights. The acting is brilliant; Jeff Bridges is an absolute god, and the little girl who played Mattie was amazing - she was actually 14 when she starred in the movie, the same age as her character. I was really sad she didn't get the best supporting actress oscar. Its an epic movie with lots of great acting, action, and the story is oh so wonderfully told.

And now, continuing on.

Today I am planning on spending my whole day in the library studying biology. I am there now, munching on McBreakfast, and thought I'd treat myself to some leisurely blogging love firsthand. I am terrified for finals! Argh! I just want to skip them. Between that and my financial worries I pretty much want to bury my head in the ground like an ostrich. But as always, good times will come - just gotta keep a positive attitude. It makes all the difference.

I painted a picture last night, inspired by Sarah and Lenore's GROW prompt for the month of April. Their first prompt was to grow a picture from a quarter-sized circle in the centre of the page. My circle was a bit off centre, but I painted a watercolor picture of an orange cross-section. I was pretty impressed with it. So lucky I have so many artistic, inspiring friends. Yay.

Now its off to nerdland, to fill my brain up to the brim with confusing Latin words and fishparts.

the way we get by.

Hello, friends. This weekend has been more hectic than expected. Despite my reservations about having a social weekend, I ended up being on the ball and spent less than 24 hours in my house since Friday morning. Quel surprise. It wasn't a waste, at least I got lots of Joeylove in, and lots of time in general with my sweet Mullock honeys. I love how no matter what they always want me around, and they make me feel like such a vital presence. They certainly are. I absolutely adore you guys.

Tonight Sarah came up for a coffee, chatsy singalong and I loved every moment of it. I hate that its so late in the semester and everyone is busy and I can't spend more times with my favorites. Sarah, darling, I ache for you everyday. You're like an instant gift certoficate to fun and happy times. I cannot wait to clay cafe with you soon and beach with you like everyday this summer. You inspire me so. I wish you happy paperings.

Now its time for day 2 of the 30 day movie challege! yay!

DAY 2: FAVORITE ANIMATED FILM

"The Secret of NIMH", 1982.

This question is equally difficult as the first. There are so many tremendous animated films in the world, its so hard to pick just one. I picked The Secret of NIMH because it was my favorite movie as a child; I even named my first pet, a little mouse, after the momma mouse in the movie, Mrs. Brisby. If I could watch this movie everyday, I probably would. It makes me feel such joy. Its pretty intelligent and sad for a children's movie, as well, and the animation is fantastic, particularly the super scary intense scenes where they're experimenting on the laboratory rats. Essentially, its about a field mouse who has to move her dying son safely before "moving day" (when the farmer plows the field all the little critters live in), and to do this she gets the help of the "rats of NIMH", who live in a rosebush near the farmhouse. They are all escaped laboratory rats, who have human levels of intelligence because of the experiments done on them. It has so many sad and hilarious moments. Definitely the animated movie I hold dearest to my heart.

Thats all for today. Lenore - you are in my thoughts, and I love you madly, and miss you like crazy <3 Stay strong, honeybee.

Goodnight, friends and darlings.
